datamatics

Is an art project that explores the potentials to perceive the invisible multi-substance of data that permeates our world. Since 2006, Ryoji Ikeda has been working and presenting this project all over the world as a series of experiments in various forms - audiovisual concerts, installations, publications and CD releases. This exhibition in Bogota is the first occasion to experience the entire vision of the datamatics project, and it is conceived by the artist especially for National University of Colombia. At this occasion, visitors will face an extraordinary experiment, through audiovisual installations with electroacustic sound, an objectual installation, a film with musical work and a sound installation.

Exhibition produced by the Dirección Nacional de Divulgación Cultural

In 2009, Japan's leading electronic composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda was invited by the National Direction of Cultural Divulgation to perform his acclaimed concert piece datamatics [ver.2.0] at the León de Greiff Auditorium. Following to our successful collaboration in 2009, we invite the artist again to have a full-scale solo exhibition datamatics at the National University of Colombia's Museum of Art, October 19 - December 17, 2011.

The exhibition will mainly consist of the works from Ikeda's project datamatics (2006-present) which explores the potentials to perceive the invisible multi-substance of data that permeates our world. It spans various media formats; installations, audiovisual concerts, radio program, CD, publications etc.

data.tron [3 SXGA+ version], commissioned by the National University of Colombia and data.tron [WUXGA] are large-scale audiovisual installations whose gigantic video projection represents a flood of microscopic data yet totally covers the visitors' sights with a perfect sound synchronization. data.matrix [nº1-10] a series of 10 video screens and data.scan [1x9 linear version] a series of 9 computer displays, for both large-scale audiovisual installations, each video image was extracted from each chapter of the datamatics [ver.2.0] concert's 10 chapters.

All video images were recomposed and reassembled into each solid single installation, again with a perfect sound synchronization. In the large space of the National University of Colombia's Museum of Art, those large-scale installations will be re-orchestrated by the artist into a very large symphonic work as a result. Through the precise and overwhelming representation of the data-scape, the experience to the visitors will be ultimately sublime.

The artist will also exhibit some existing and new works; dataphonics [installation version] commissioned by the National University of Colombia, is a new sound installation that will exhibit the aesthetic result of Ikeda's research of "data of sounds" and "sounds of data".

The video screening C⁴I shows how data shapes our understanding of the world. Video images of landscapes are progressively abstracted and subtly suggest the convergence of the real and the virtual. C⁴I was created as an audiovisual concert piece and had been touring all over the world. Its video screening version is the first time to be shown.

data.microfilm is a sculptural installation using 35mm microfilm that shows 13904 frames of the image from the datamatics [ver.2.0] concert. This piece raises a big question towards the life of data.

Ryoji Ikeda

Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda creates at the extremes of sound, light and mathematics to produce complex transformative works of singular beauty. He's known as an artist who managed to combine visual and sonic media. He has been hailed by critics as one of the most radical and innovative contemporary composer for his live performances, his audiovisual installations and his pioneering CD releases in a minimalist electronic music's world.

For years, he has been redefining his own concept of time, space, and sound through a versatile work that constantly put the viewer's senses to the test. He performed in many international venues such as Pompidou Center (Paris), National Museum Reina Sofia (Madrid), Tate Modern (London). In April 2009, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo presented Ikeda's first major retrospective that included new commissions, large-scale projections, sound works and sculptural pieces, which fuse sound and image in intensely physical experiences. In May 2011, he will present a large-scale solo exhibition at Park Avenue Armory, New York.

Ikeda has collaborated with such artists as choreographer William Forsythe, architect Toyo Ito, musician and visual artist Carsten Nicolai, photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Japanese artist collective dumb type. Ikeda lives and works in Paris.
